Horn of Africa Appeal

Half of Somalia's 7.5 million population has been affected by drought and every third Somali is either a refugee or internally displaced.
Food insecurity remains at emergency levels across parts of East Africa.

13 million people – half of them children – are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

Thousands of children have already died, and more than 320,000 are so severely malnourished that they too may perish in the coming weeks and months if relief operations are not scaled up rapidly. World Outreach International is again partnering with our trusted friends from Kenyan based Christian charity "Operation Blessing” in response to the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa.

The need

So far we have targeted West Pokot district, a largely dry land area experiencing severe degradation to the environment leaving the land depleted of air, water and nutrient rich soil.

The soil degradation leads to famine and poverty threatening the lives and livelihoods of the people.

Our objectives – Food distribution

So far more than 8 tonnes of dry maize has been distributed to two communities in West Pokot and Nkwon on the northern border with Ethiopia.

The local district commissioner and chief directed our teams to needy families. Each family was given 10kgs of dry maize.

The Operation Blessing team had a wonderful time with both villages. The villagers sang songs of praise and were so happy to see the truck carrying food for them.

Personal Stories

Cheptayo (85 years old) said, "Many times whenever the government distribute food I have never been lucky to get most of the time. What I have today I will eat bit by bit or skip some meals for it to last a month. Thank you so much and God bless you.”
Kudu (90 years old) lives with her orphaned four grandchildren. "My children died of sickness and hunger. The hospital is very far from here so accessing health facility is a challenge. The share I have received today…can last us for two weeks."

Chepechemosoy (70 years old) shed tears when receiving her 10kgs of maize. "I cannot hide my happiness, these are tears of happiness.

She had stayed for seven days without food just waiting for a miracle.

One 10kg bag of maize will feed an elderly man or woman for one month. Two 10kg bags of maize will feed a family of up to six people for two weeks. Price includes transport costs and distribution.
